The Inn at 835 - This Inn was planned during the Arts and Crafts Movement by one of the area's leading architects, George Helmle. The building's creator was Miss Bell Miller, a turn-of-the-century local businesswoman and a florist to Springfield's high society.
Bell started her floral business in the 1890's, when she was only in her early 20's. Her trade flourished and she decided to expand her small floral business to a sprawl of nearby greenhouses, which encompassed a city block. In time, Bell also expanded her business interests by building a lush apartment dwelling, working with George Helmle in designing her dream at 835 South Second Street.
By December of 1909, Bell had created one of Springfield's premier residences, exquisite oak detailing, with airy verandahs, and massive fireplaces to warm the heart. Located on a corner, near the neighborhood once called as "Aristocracy Hill", the building's simple, distinguished exterior design appealed to a refined sense of taste. As the years passed, a group of aristocratic tenants graced her luxury apartments.
Today, this elegant, Classical Revival structure has been completely renovated to afford customers every modern convenience without detracting from the sense of sociable luxury which Bell Miller created. The Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been honored as one of the Springfield's landmark by the City of Springfield.
